Turned from plum wood, with a rich medium-brown tone and natural variation between warm amber and deeper chestnut areas. The surface shows an irregular grain with pronounced horizontal growth lines and darker figuring. A visible area of natural weathering and cracking adds texture and depth, highlighting the material’s organic character. The finish is smooth with a soft sheen, revealing the density and fine grain typical of plum wood.

These sculptural wooden spheres are sourced in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the far north-east of Italy, close to the Slovenian border. Each one is hand-turned from storm-fallen wood — apple, plum, elm — gathered from the surrounding forests. The maker, who prefers to remain anonymous, works slowly and intuitively, allowing the natural character of each piece of salvaged wood to guide the final form.
